Cassilda and Carcosa "Tubes Transformers Transistors & Tape"

Brooklyn’s emerging artist, Cassilda and Carcosa, brings in an album that is filled with so many distinctive sounds. “Tubes Transformers Transistors & Tape” was made without a computer-DAW. This unique album was composed using hardware sequencers, old tape machines, analog synths, circuit-bent FM synths, and old tape machines from the 70’s and 80’s.

The first track is “FM Acid Funk”. Right off the bat, we are starting with a fun, upbeat electronic type instrumental. This was a great choice to begin the album with because it brings an enjoyable vibe, already engaging listeners in for the rest of the album.

“No Masks ?!” is a lot more on the calmer spectrum, but still plenty of fun to listen to. In this, you can hear an array of synths and bells. Followed by the sound of soft trumpets harmonizing together to produce a nice, ambient sound. It’s definitely a piece that can be described as a mix of both funky and smooth.

“The Prophet’ Paradise” starts out with a low synth, followed by the sound of cymbals tapping in a consistent rhythm. The rest of the song plays soft bells leaving us to enjoy a light, funky sound throughout the track. The soundscapes and melodic structure induces a soothing rich vibe.

“The Yellow Sign” brings it back to an upbeat tempo with a groovy kick. In this track we are introduced to even more amazing techno sounds. The soft riffs in the background create a delightful essence and really bring the whole piece together perfectly.

“Intermission” briefly takes us to a calm, comfortable, and relaxing place before we get into the rest of the album.

“The Repairer of Reputations” is definitely one that is easy listening. It has an ambient melody with a mix of electronic beats together to create a unique sound. This chill out song is one that will surely become one of the most memorable on the album.

“Lymphoma Funk” has nice bells placed in the intro that follow a distinct rhythmic pattern. I find it resonates a soothing sensation to the ear, as it then brings in some drum to get your head bobbing.

To finish it off with “Cloudwaves” was a good choice. This track starts off with a light intro. It continues to softly flow throughout as we hear an arrangement of different instruments soon start to take over. The track gives the illusion of being placed in a peaceful atmosphere. Finishing up the piece, we can hear a calm fade into the ending of the track and the album.

This album did not limit itself in any way. There were mixes of instrumentation and sounds throughout the whole track. Through each piece, you can hear music that is upbeat, but also some pieces that were light and airy. A few of the tracks fused both mediums forging a unique blend, which is a very creative concept. All in all, “Tubes Transformers Transistors & Tape” is a must listen. A myriad of moods are elicited forming something essential you could listen to in any given mood.
